Thank you for looking to utilize the SAFEChE modules for Process Safety Education Across the Chemical Engineering curriculum.
What is the goal of this website?
Sometimes chemical process safety is taught in a separate safety course within the chemical engineering curriculum, and sometimes it is taught only in the senior year as a part of the process design course. Regardless of the format, a lot of faculty feel ill-equipped to teach the skills and tasks associated with process safety.
The purpose of this website is to provide professors and students with real case studies and resources so that process safety can be more effectively and easily learned throughout the curriculum and become an integral part of chemical engineering culture.
How to use these modules
Modules are set up to be implemented as a homework assignment within a core course near when the corresponding topics are taught. It is recommended to introduce the topic and possibly the incident within the course and have a short debrief about the incident after the module homework was submitted. Ideally this is to help the students feel like it’s not “just another homework”.
A password for solutions can be obtained by instructors by filling out the Contact SAFEChE Form. Many of these solutions are recommendations and may deviate some from what is written but is to be used as guidelines.
Short tutorials about all of the aspects of the modules are available on the SAFEChE website. For more in-depth knowledge on each topic, it is suggested to explore the AICHE CCPS SACHE modules. These modules are free for undergraduate and graduate chemical engineering students. AICHE membership is required but is free for undergraduate students. For faculty, you can get an access code for SACHE modules by contacting Jing Chen at AICHE at [email protected].
Additionally, equipment used in process safety implementation can be found on the Visual Encyclopedia of Chemical Engineering Equipment.
